Freeing a Four-Year-Old’s Hand: Protecting a Child’s Growth and Future

4-year-old boy · treated at Shija Hospitals, Imphal, Manipur · Hand and wrist

The survivor’s journey, before and after surgery.

4-year-old boy lived with burns locking four fingers into his palm, threatening irreversible deformity.

Childhood is a window of rapid skeletal growth, and untreated burn scars turn that growth into a deformity. At just four years old, the boy sustained burns to his left hand in Manipur. As the delicate skin healed, aggressive keloidal contracture bands formed across four fingers, pinning them tight against his palm.

He could not hold toys, catch a ball, or participate in the early developmental games essential for a toddler. Because childhood bones grow faster than rigid scar tissue, the contracture was actively pulling his growing finger bones out of normal alignment.

The Silent Threat of Pediatric Contractures

In pediatric burn patients, time is the enemy. Untreated contracture bands act like tight cords tied across growing limbs. As the metacarpal and phalangeal bones lengthen, the tethering scars cause irreversible joint subluxations and permanent bone curvature.

For his family in regional Manipur, the cost of specialized pediatric plastic surgery at a tertiary hospital was an obstacle. Every month they delayed increased the danger of permanent bone deformity.

The Surgical Intervention at Shija Hospitals

The boy was enrolled through BHF’s northeast clinical partner, Shija Hospitals in Imphal. Founder Dr. Rajeev B Ahuja coordinated immediate surgical intervention under complete BHF sponsorship.

The pediatric surgical team performed meticulous digital contracture releases across all four affected fingers, deepening the web spaces and releasing the underlying fascial tethers. A delicate skin graft was contoured over the volar defect to ensure full developmental elasticity.

Growing Up Free

Today, his hand opens fully. He holds pencils, plays freely with his siblings, and his hand is growing normally without any risk of permanent skeletal distortion.
