Restoring Mobility to a Fourteen-Year-Old Boy: Breaking the Scars of Immobility

14-year-old boy · treated at Soni Burn Hospital, Hisar, Haryana · Arm and shoulder

The survivor’s journey, before and after surgery.

14-year-old boy had his mobility stopped in its tracks by rigid burn scars locking his limb into immobility.

A fourteen-year-old boy should be running, playing sports, and exploring the world, not trapped in scars. The boy sustained deep burns that healed into contracture bands that restricted his joint mobility and pulled his limb into unnatural alignment.

Everyday tasks that healthy teenagers take for granted, buttoning a shirt, riding a cycle, participating in sports, became ordeals. He withdrew into the background of his village community, embarrassed by his physical limitations.

The Clinical Pathology of Restrictive Burn Bands

Deep thermal injuries destroy the dermis and elastic subcutaneous layer. During prolonged secondary healing, fibrous collagen fibers align in rigid parallel bundles that resist any mechanical stretch.

Without surgical release, muscle atrophy sets in and secondary deformities emerge in adjacent joints. His father, a humble daily-wage earner in Haryana, had exhausted their savings on emergency burn care and had nothing left for reconstructive surgery.

The Surgical Intervention at Soni Burn Hospital

BHF enrolled the boy under our regional Haryana surgical program at Soni Burn Hospital in Hisar. Under Dr. Rajeev B Ahuja’s national foundation oversight, the boy received full sponsorship.

The surgical team performed extensive scar release, dividing the dense cords that restricted mobility. Full-thickness skin grafts were placed to restore skin laxity, followed by tailored immobilization and active physiotherapy.

Active and Independent

The boy has fully regained his movement. He is back in school, actively playing with his peers, and confident that his future will not be defined by his burn scars.
