From Five Years of Silence to Looking Up Again
The survivor’s journey, before and after surgery.
Young woman lived for five years with dense post-burn contracture pulling her chin tight against her chest.
A burn accident takes seconds, but without reconstructive care, it can hold a young life captive for years. At seventeen, a domestic scald burn altered everything for the woman. While the emergency clinical care saved her life scar tissue began contracting as the weeks turned into months. Over the next five years, thick bands of hypertrophic scar tissue tethered her jaw directly toward her chest, leaving her with post-burn neck contracture.
For a young woman stepping into adulthood, the physical constraint was hard. She could not turn her neck to the side, look up, or swallow without acute strain. But the psychological weight was even heavier. Unable to lift her chin, she spent five years avoiding social contact, walking with her gaze pinned to the floor.
The Cost of Waiting
Contractures do not heal on their own. As scar tissue matures, it tightens further, compressing blood vessels, pulling facial skin downward, and locking joints in fixed deformities. The only answer is surgical release and reconstruction.
Five full years slipped away while the family endured the heartache of having no path forward.
The Surgical Intervention at MR Hospitals
When Burn Healing Foundation's regional outreach network identified her case, our founder Dr. Rajeev B Ahuja and our clinical partner MR Hospitals in Erode immediately cleared her for full sponsorship. Her surgery was scheduled with zero financial burden on her family.
The specialized surgical team performed a complete release of the dense neck contracture bands, releasing the tension that had pulled her jaw for over 1,800 days. A full-thickness skin graft was carefully placed, restoring full neck extension and recreating the natural angle between jaw and throat.
A Future Restored
Today, the woman is back home in Erode. Postoperative physiotherapy has preserved her range of motion, and for the first time in five years, she can look forward without pain. She speaks with confidence, moves freely, and is preparing to pursue vocational training.
