15-year-old girl faced social isolation as hand contractures froze her fingers in fixed flexion.
Adolescence is when young women discover their independence, burn contractures steal that independence away. At fifteen years old, the girl from Haryana was living with burn scar contractures across her hand. The injury had healed with dense fibrous tissue that pinned her fingers into rigid clawing.
She could not help with household work, write her examinations comfortably, or step outside without feeling the gaze of strangers. Her teenage years were increasingly clouded by isolation and despair.
The Burden of Adolescent Burn Scars
When burns affect the dorsal or palmar surfaces of the hand during teenage years, rapid growth accelerates the joint stiffness. Skin that cannot stretch forces joints into hyperextension or flexion.
Her family waited years hoping for a miracle.
The Surgical Intervention at Soni Burn Hospital
The girl was brought to BHF’s partner center, Soni Burn Hospital in Hisar, Haryana. The specialized burn reconstruction team, backed by BHF, took on her case with zero cost to her parents.
The surgical team executed a meticulous release of the scar contractures, freeing the trapped tendons and restoring full passive extension. Skin grafts were harvested and secured to ensure elastic and durable coverage.
A Future of Hope and Independence
Today, her hands open freely. Through dedicated physiotherapy at Soni Burn Hospital, she has regained full functional grip, resumed her studies, and looks forward to her future with genuine optimism.
